This ministry began in Houston, Texas in the summer of 1999. A woman in Bakersfield, CA suffering from breast cancer received a Prayer Blanket. The idea caught on in her parish. Since then many blankets have been provided to critically ill adults and children from different parts of the country. Each blanket bears a card saying “You are covered in prayer” and recipients report that almost immediately they sense a spiritual and loving presence.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE A PRAYER BLANKET?
Individuals may request blankets for themselves or on behalf of a friend or family member who is suffering with a critical illness or facing surgery by contacting the church office at 812.944.6448 ext. 100.
The Prayer Blanket Ministry Team meets the second Tuesday of each month at 10am in Room 5 of our New Albany campus. At these meetings the members bring in completed blankets and offer prayers for the recipients. Each month a portion of the blankets are donated to Hosparus of Southern Indiana for distribution to their patients. Then the ladies take home fabric for new blankets to sew at home for the next month’s meeting. If you enjoy sewing and would like to join our team, please contact Gail Jennings through the church office at the above number.
The Prayer Blanket Ministry depends on your donations, either monetary or of fabric supplies. Checks can be made payable to Graceland Baptist Church with a notation that it is intended for the Prayer Blanket Ministry.
A LABOR OF LOVE
When one touches the blanket, they know they are not alone.
The Prayer Blanket is a tangible symbol of the faith community’s prayers.
